The Group's principal activity is the administration of its 50% investment in the profit and net assets of Reed Elsevier Group Plc , as one of the two parent companies of the Reed Elsevier publishing and information business. In 1993 Elsevier NV and Reed International plc (UK) amalgamated their operational activities by transferring their subsidiaries and other investments to two holding companies: Reed Elsevier plc (London) and Elsevier Reed Finance BV (Amsterdam). Elsevier NV holds 61% and Reed International plc the remaining 39% interest in Reed Elsevier Finance BV, while each company holds 50% in Reed Elsevier plc. Both holding companies are managed on a unified basis. Reed Elsevier is active in the publishing and printing of scientific, professional and business information, as well as newspapers, consumer magazines and trade books. The Group also offers database and CD-ROM products.
